Sponsored by The Shepherd’s Center of Greater Winston-Salem will meet on

11:45 am – 1:00 pm
Using Music with Loved Ones Living with Dementia

Speaker: Dr. Allison Gagnon
UNC School of the Arts

Dr. Gagnon will share information from her research and demonstrate how music can be used for fun, or as a tool in carrying out personal care tasks which often produce agitation and resistance for persons living with dementia. Music can evoke memories and awaken lines of communication. Making music together by singing and moving can create moments of joy even during challenging times.

Dr.Gagnon is a professional pianist and educator who has been on the faculty at the UNC School of the Arts since 1998. Her experience with her parents during their dementia journey led her to take a semester leave in the fall of 2019 to research the role of music in dementia care and to launch a pilot project through UNCSA’s ArtistCorps Community Engagement Initiative that began service at the Williams Adult Day Center. The team’s work has continued through the pandemic, creating video content and resources that can be used in the home.

Drawing from her personal experience, her research, her skills as an educator, and her love of music, Dr. Gagnon will inspire us and leave us with tools we can use and share.
